Equinix data centers contain diverse fiber entry points into the building through which our network customers run their fiber.
These diverse fiber paths help to ensure maximum network uptime. In addition, the fiber paths connect this IBX facility to neighboring IBXs, delivering interconnected access between all Equinix customers within the metro area.
Antenna
Many sites are equipped with rooftop areas where customers can install their GPS, line of sight or dish antenna.
Mantrap
To reach the data center floor, every Equinix visitor must pass through a series of interlocking doors and travel through a mantrap. The mantrap can only be accessed via two sets of automatic doors, one of which opens to the lobby, the other to the customer circulation area. The doors are made of bulletproof Lexan and are never open at the same time.
Customer Care
The customer care area is a dedicated space where customers can conduct business or take a break. Conference rooms provide private meeting areas via an online reservation process, free of charge.
A customer break area offers vending machines with coffee and snacks, as well as tables and chairs. Online access is available as are private customer workstations in a convenient, shared work environment. For more information, see the Customer Guide.

Our International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers offer 24/7/365 security and customer access, along with a global uptime record of 99.9999%.
Structurally, not all of our facilities are identical—some were built from the ground up while others were acquired or developed in existing spaces.
Equinix is also vendor-neutral, meaning we welcome all service providers inside our data centers, with no preference given to any single vendor. That attracts a broad selection of service providers and their potential partners to our facilities, creating countless opportunities for interconnection. We also offer expert guidance to these companies in order to help them make an informed data center decision.
Security Lobby
Within the Security Lobby, visitor identity must be verified with valid government-issued photo identification.
An intrusion detection system monitors all ingress/egress points throughout the facility, while on-premises security personnel physically monitor the facility.
Prior to entry into an IBX facility, authorized access is required. Access enrollment types, security profiles and visitor permissions can be managed within the Equinix Customer Portal.
Authorized visitors may use a proxy card with biometric verification for entry into the facility. Authorized access can be set up as permanent permission for 24x7x365 access or with temporary admittance for a specified date/time.
IBXflex Office Space
IBXflex® allows customers to build dedicated office or storage space within or near our IBX data centers. IBXflex space comes with 24-hour on-site IBX access, and has the same security, fire suppression and environmental controls as any space inside an Equinix data center.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
In order to meet the high uptime requirements for data centers, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems are often deployed with redundancy.
Each system of interlocking electrical equipment ensures that continuous power flows to all facility equipment in the case of an outage. The standby UPS systems ensure the seamless transition between grid power, battery backup and generator power in the event of common power problems.
Fire Detection and Suppression Systems
Every IBX has a very early smoke detection alarm system, called VESDA for short. The system samples the air at adjustable periods of time, and if the sample is different from a reference sample the machine has taken, an alarm is activated. But water in the dry-pipe system isn’t released until a sprinkler head valve opens, and that requires a temperature of 165 degrees at the sprinkler location. The water is then released only in the area of the fire, and if there’s a false alarm, we have auxiliary drains, so we can safely empty the water out of the facility.
Electrical
Our power systems are designed and managed to perform against rigorous testing and operational processes, with fully documented maintenance procedures at each site.
Equinix engineers also use proprietary automated telemetric systems to continuously monitor all power system components at our data centers, ensuring quick response times and effective support.
Raised Floor
The main colocation floors are the core of each Equinix IBX data center. Equipment is located in secure private or secure shared environments. Each location provides for robust interconnection among tenants to ensure direct, private exchange of IT traffic with a diverse set of counterparties and providers at distributed IT exchange points inside the carrier-neutral facility.
Several of our data centers use a traditional “raised floor” system, where the floor panels are removed and cables are snaked in underneath, as opposed to a system where cables are installed overhead.
Rooftop facilities are critical to IBX operations in many ways. Cooling, antenna locations and other infrastructure contribute to the smooth operation of the building.
Operations Center
Our operations center is staffed 24 hours a day to ensure that everything inside the data center is running smoothly. The center monitors the essential systems inside our data centers, including the environment, air flow, power backup and fire suppression.
We also have engineering expertise and subject-matter experts on staff to handle emergency maintenance and preparedness for all key infrastructure components. All of this is tracked from a single, central location and then networked to Equinix headquarters.
Shipping and Receiving
Our IBX Operations staff receives and ships equipment through our loading docks. Customers have the option to get boxes delivered to their cage through our standard Equinix Smart Hands® service, while rack and stack is available through Smart Hands custom ordering.
Breakroom
Take a break and unwind. Our customer break areas offer vending machines and kitchen facilities with coffee and snacks, as well as tables, chairs and other amenities.

Smart Glass overlooks the colocation area, allowing for observation of regular operating activities. When activated it provides additional security while equipment swap and other security-forward activities are underway.

The NAP of the Americas has 8 primary fiber duct banks:
3 arriving from the North and South and 1 each from the East and West. Meet point rooms serve as the interconnection hubs within the building and for other customers of The NAP of the Americas.
Onsite fuel reserves consist of ten (10), 15,000 gallon tanks and two (2) 12,000 gallon tanks for a total capacity of 174,000 gallons. The fuel is allocated by floor, allowing approximately 30,000 gallons per floor with a local fuel distributor contracted to replenish the fuel supply as needed.
NAP facilitates public peering through our Ethernet-based switching fabric or public Peering fabric. Carriers interconnect with other networks to achieve increased traffic efficiency and a reduction in transit costs.
